3 Ways to Motivate Wellness Program First-Timers

New participants are the lifeblood of a dynamic, growing health enhancement program. Get them involved early as a member of your health plan or fitness center and they’ll have a higher rate of ongoing participation than latecomers. Early conversion requires successful motivation. Here are some tips to get them on board now:

  1. Solve their problem, not yours. You can predict with reasonable accuracy many of the individuals who will produce higher health and productivity costs for the organization simply by looking at them and asking 3 or 4 questions. But that’s not their problem, it’s yours. And if you jump right into fixing a problem they don’t own, they’ll have no reason to get in your program.
  2. Remember they trust themselves more than they trust you early in the relationship. This fact means that trying to “sell” them on a service by highlighting all the features is a waste of time. Get them to explore the benefits they seek, then connect your services to their needs. In other words, allow them to sell themselves.
  3. Acknowledge that less is more. Don’t overdo the credentials, features, and success stories early in the relationship. Try to identify 1-3 things they value most and reinforce how your services support them.
